Rhythmic and concise, Leaf Haikus bases its form and subject matter on the haiku but achieves meaning through unexpected insertions of the body into nature. The body that stops the leaves’ progression and forces their autumnal journey into linear performances disrupts the haiku’s characteristic address of circular time marked by the change of seasons. The understatement found in haikus influences the poetic treatment of this work. Through the contrast of color-sensitive depictions of natural environments with unusual performative interactions, Leaf Haikus is metaphoric of control, disguise, and change.
